Fully whiteboard-covered magnetic folder.

This is a perfect tool to increase capability and confidence in phonology, orthography and morphology in readers.

Open, the folder measures 12 x 18 inches. The blank white side is great space for dictation sentence practice or for providing structured practice when you give the kids a multisyllabic word to chunk into syllables as they attempt to spell it.

Closed, the folder measures 9 x 12 inches. 

As students participate in word chaining sessions, they improve in phonemic discrepancy. Changing “turn” into “burn” into “barn” into “bark” helps students to listen and focus in on the phoneme level of words.

Focusing on the spelling patterns of various sounds develops orthographic mapping in the brain. We hear the /sh/ sound in many words. It can be represented by “sh”, “ch”,“ti” and even “ci” at times. Spelling requires much more rigorously established memory of letter patterns than reading. Reading requires orthographic recognition, but spelling requires orthographic recall and application. For typical reading students, 20 minutes daily is required. For students who struggle and need more practice to develop orthographic mapping, you'd want to increase word work/spelling instruction and practice to 30 minutes a day.

With the whiteboard surface, even if a tile is not available,  the student can write in the spelling pattern required.

Additionally, students can write in an unlimited number of prefixes and suffixes when required as they increase in skill and knowledge level. The outer surface of the folder can be used to practice letter writing formation and fluency.

The Extra Pink Spot

This can be used as a holding spot for teacher-created tiles for less common vowel graphemes such as:

“al” for /aw/ in words like: chalk, talk, walk

“augh” in caught, taught,

“oul” for /oo/ sound in would, should and could

“ough” for /ow/ /oe/ /oo/ /aw/ in drought, dough, through, thought

The Extra space near Black Spots

This can be used as a holding spot for teacher-created tiles for less common consonant spellings like:

“ve” for /v/ in serve, love, have

“me” for /m/ in some, come

“ne” for /n/ in none

“se” for /s/ or /z/ in house, choose, lose, moose

“le”  for /u +l/ in settle,

“ce” for /s/ in since, mince, rinse

“ci” for /sh/ in special

“si” for /sh/ /zh/ in mansion, vision

“ssi” for /sh/ in mission

”sc” for /s/ in scent, science, scissors, scenery 

”st” for /s/ in hustle, whistle, thistle
