These 12 short full-color books feature repeated examples of short and long vowel sounds and common sight words.
Words with unfamiliar spelling patterns can we used to demonstrate same sound/different spelling patterns that students will encounter. Parents or teachers can front load these words as a pre-reading spelling activity.
For example:
sandwiches — stretch the word, help the child segment the word to count the Syllables in “sandwiches”
On a paper or whiteboard, make a long line for each syllable.
Hovering over those two syllable lines, make a small sound line for each sound contained in each syllable.

Discuss the the plural ending of “es” and its two sounds. The schwa sound spelled with “e” and the /zzzzzzz/ sound spelled with “s”.
Discuss other plural words: fishes, buses, cats, why do some use “es” and some “s”?
Another great word to front load with segmentation, spelling and discussion is the word “banana”. Check out the two different sounds with the same “a” spelling. Depending on dialect, the middle “a” represents either a short /a/ sound or a broad /ah/ sound. The first and the last “a” represents the lazy schwa sound.
This set gives the young reader a chance to apply their knowledge of English orthography.
