__________ _____________
Discuss the the plural ending of “es” and its two sounds. The schwa sound spelled with “e” and the /zzzzzzz/ sound spelled with “s”.
Discuss other plural words: fishes, buses, cats, why do some use “es” and some “s”?
Another great word to front load with segmentation, spelling and discussion is the word “banana”. Check out the two different sounds with the same “a” spelling. Depending on dialect, the middle “a” represents either a short /a/ sound or a broad /ah/ sound. The first and the last “a” represents the lazy schwa sound.
This set gives the young reader a chance to apply their knowledge of English orthography.
